Piano Lessons for Kids
Private piano lessons for children are held once a week, and parents may choose 30, 45 or 60 minute intervals. 30 minute lessons are recommended for young beginners, and lesson length increases with experience.
Beginner students start by learning the basics; names of the notes, proper rhythmic practice, and sight reading concepts. By the time they’ve completed their first workbook, students have the ability to learn and play basic musical pieces on their own with very little supervision. They’ve got a handle on proper finger technique, rhythm, dynamics and note naming. They also begin to learn how to perform, using techniques to turn nerves into “performance energy”, and options that help them move through a piece when they’re stuck.
As the student grows musically, so do their workbooks, and musical choices. At Larkspur, we encourage uniqueness and creativity and allow students to play songs of their choice, as well as songs they need to play in order to introduce proper technique, scales, arpeggios and chords.
We teach artistry in movement, use of the hands and the proper use of breathing while playing are important details. Something as simple as playing with the correct hand positions and motions can prevent injuries in the future.
In addition to their private lessons students have the opportunity to performance in two recitals during the school year, as well as a competitive festival and workshops. These events give them the chance to experience performance and put what they’ve learned to work!
At Larkspur, students learn music composition and theory through lessons and engaging games, but they also develop character qualities like dedication, discipline, integrity and commitment that last a lifetime.

Piano Lessons for Adults
Larkspur Music Studio instructor, Susie has a special place in her heart for teaching adult students. Adults bring an exciting dynamic to the studio, and whether they have had prior experience or not, we can help them achieve their musical goals in a safe, and fun environment.
Many adults have the desire to learn to play piano, but their fears prevent them from experiencing the joy, thrill and pride of learning something new. At Larkspur, we understand those fears and work to ensure that our adult students understand that it is never too late to start something you love!
In addition to teaching proper technique, rhythm, breathing and hand position, Susie values positive reinforcement when it comes to instructing her adult students. Pointing out the positive points during the lesson can often lend itself to fixing any mistakes that might pop up. Larkspur Music provides adult students with a seasoned teacher who embodies patience and encouragement in her teaching style.
When new students meet with Susie, they will be able to express their desires and expectations for their piano instructions. In addition to getting to know Susie students will be able to express their goals and discuss Susie’s technique, allowing them to feel confident in their choice of instructor.

Piano Lessons for Experienced Students
If you’re transferring from another teacher, we understand it can be challenging, but please know that this can be an exciting, and beneficial change. Having a fresh start with a new instructor can help students grow, learning different aspects of piano that might not have been covered in previous instruction.
Upon the first meeting, transfer students should be familiar with performance and ready to show off what they’ve learned with their previous teachers. In addition to playing for Susie, she will ask them some questions and determine their sight reading level, helping her understand where they are in their instruction so that she can begin to create an individualized plan to help students continue their growth as a pianist.
To find out more, please contact the studio. We look forward to getting started with you!
